Preserving Patients' Identities: Patient Biographies Before Major Surgery
Abstract:
Since 2019, the authors have implemented the project Knowing Each Other Better Is Better Care, inviting patients scheduled for major surgery to write short biographies to be shared with their care teams. Rooted in the recognition that a strong therapeutic alliance improves treatment outcomes and patient satisfaction, this initiative aims to enhance patient-provider connections by integrating patients' biographies into their care. Analysis of 10 biographies reveals four recurring themes: the desire to be seen as unique individuals, the need for mutual trust with health-care providers, the wish for their hopes to be understood, and gratitude for the opportunity to share their stories. These findings challenge the custom that physicians and hospital staff should rely mainly on family members to bear the moral responsibility for preserving patients' identities. Patients clearly expressed their hope that they can entrust their providers with the responsibility not only to maintain their detailed medical records, but also to hear and absorb their intimate memories, fears, and hopes. This approach has the potential to enhance both the perceived and actual quality of care, ensuring that patients feel heard, valued, and respected throughout their hospital journey.
