1Sharifa Abu-Hamda (sharifaabuhamda@gmail.com) is a disability advocate and the coleader for Civics League for Disability Rights, in New York, New York. From 2019 through July 2026, she served as the manager for the independent living program at Independence Care System, in New York City. The author was also a member of the Independence Care System health home. The screening described in this essay was supported through a grant that Independence Care System received from Affinity Legacy and the New York Health Foundation to improve primary care access for people with physical disabilities.
