Background:
Despite the well-established importance of physical activity (PA), its levels are rapidly declining worldwide and are known to be associated with adverse health outcomes. This study investigated the association between weekend warrior PA patterns and dyslipidemia among South Korean workers using nationally representative data.
Methods:
We analyzed cross-sectional data from 13,814 participants in the 2019-2023 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. PA patterns were categorized into three groups: regularly active, weekend warrior, and inactive. Dyslipidemia was the dependent variable and was defined based on total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglyceride levels. Adjusted multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the association between PA patterns and dyslipidemia.
Results:
Among the 13,814 participants, 30.7% had dyslipidemia. Of the 1,671 individuals with a weekend warrior PA pattern, 27.6% had dyslipidemia. Compared with physically inactive participants, those with a weekend warrior PA pattern (adjusted OR = 0.79, 95% CI = 0.69-0.91) and those with a regularly active PA pattern (adjusted OR = 0.72, 95% CI = 0.61-0.86) had lower odds of dyslipidemia.
Conclusion:
Weekend warrior and regularly active PA patterns were associated with lower odds of dyslipidemia compared with physical inactivity among South Korean workers. These findings should be interpreted as cross-sectional associations and may help inform future longitudinal research on PA patterns and dyslipidemia among working adults.
