Abstract:
De-escalation strategies, or procedures that result in rapid cessation of dangerous behavior, may be needed when the behavior presents an immediate risk of harm to the individual or others. Most de-escalation recommendations are general and not individualized on the basis of the individual or circumstances. This study evaluates an assessment comparing five de-escalation strategies for an individual who engaged in dangerous behavior. Two strategies resulted in shorter durations of behavior episodes relative to other strategies, suggesting a promising avenue for additional study focused on individualizing de-escalation recommendations.
