How to rock your general surgery residency: Ten principles for thriving in surgical training
1Emergency Surgery Unit, Careggi University Hospital, Florence, Italy.
Abstract:
General surgery residency is a challenging but rewarding journey that extends beyond technical dexterity alone. Although medical knowledge and surgical competence remain the foundations of professional growth, becoming a well-rounded surgeon also requires the development of judgment, resilience, teamwork, and professional identity. Mentorship, continuous learning, and personal well-being are equally important in navigating the demands of surgical training. Drawing from personal experience and insights gained throughout residency, this editorial presents ten principles intended to support residents through their training journey while offering mentors and surgical educators an opportunity to reflect on how future surgeons are supported and shaped.
