Abstract:
In this article, we review studies that bring video-oculography (VOG) to the emergency department and inpatient settings, with an emphasis on acute vestibular syndrome. We find that most current studies are research-based, rather than pilot clinical programs. Many focus on the use of VOG to differentiate central disorders (eg, ischemic stroke) from peripheral (eg, inner ear) mimics. We critically appraise the classes of eye movements studied by each, and then provide an update on recent work in leveraging artificial intelligence, telemedicine, and the use of consumer devices and smartphones for VOG-applications, to expand reach and improve vestibular diagnosis.
