Abstract:
The aryl(silyl)stannylene ArMesSn{Si(SiMe3)3} (1, ArMes = 2,6-Mes2C6H3, Mes = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2) featuring a strongly electron donating silyl substituent has been shown to offer a close to thermodynamically neutral platform for the shuttling of H2 (ΔG° = -3.7 kcal mol-1 for H2 uptake). While the direct activation and release of dihydrogen itself is precluded by prohibitively high kinetic barriers (ΔG‡ = -35.7 kcal mol-1), 1 will dehydrogenate both ammonia- and dimethylamine-borane to yield the tin(IV) dihydride (1)H2. (1)H2, in turn, is shown to be competent for hydrogen transfer to an NHC, yielding the corresponding dihydro-imidazole and regenerating the Sn(II) state in the form of the stannylene-carbene adduct 1·IMe4.

Reduction of Alkenes: Asymmetric Catalytic Hydrogenation
The metal catalyst used can be either heterogeneous or homogeneous. When hydrogenation of an alkene generates a chiral center, a pair of enantiomeric products is expected to form. However, an enantiomeric excess of one of the products can be facilitated using an enantioselective reaction or an...
Reduction of Alkynes to cis-Alkenes: Catalytic Hydrogenation
Like alkenes, alkynes can be reduced to alkanes in the presence of transition metal catalysts such as Pt, Pd, or Ni. The reaction involves two sequential syn additions of hydrogen via a cis-alkene intermediate.
Reduction of Alkenes: Catalytic Hydrogenation
Metals like palladium, platinum, and nickel are commonly used in their solid forms — fine powder on an inert surface. As these catalysts remain insoluble in the reaction mixture, they are referred to as heterogeneous catalysts.
