The Impact of Total Documentation Quality on Judicial Outcomes in Nonfatal Strangulation: A Multisite Retrospective
Introduction:
Because nonfatal strangulation frequently lacks visible physical evidence, this study evaluates whether a specific quality threshold in forensic medical documentation significantly increases the probability of criminal charges and convictions.
Methods:
This retrospective review evaluated forensic medical documentation from adult patients who underwent an examination after an alleged nonfatal strangulation in 2024 and 2025. Data were collected across a diverse 6-hospital Midwestern health system.
Results:
Results indicated that the impact of forensic documentation quality on judicial outcomes is heavily moderated by time, with the highest probabilities of criminal charges and convictions occurring when high-quality examinations are conducted immediately after the event. Furthermore, age differences in charging probabilities were only observed during early examinations, as a 24-hour delay completely eliminated the legal advantage found in older patients.
Discussion:
The impact of total quality documentation on judicial outcomes must be viewed through the lens of a fractured judicial process, where persistent gaps remain for patients with nonfatal strangulation who report in the emergency setting.
