Does the HPB surgeon need a vascular surgeon?
11Department of Surgery, Division of Liver, Biliary and Pancreatic Surgery, Asklepios Hospital Barmbek, Hamburg, Germany.
Abstract:
Complex HPB surgery increasingly requires vascular resection and reconstruction. Therefore, vascular expertise is an essential part of surgical planning, technical execution, and oncological decision-making. While highly complex arterial, caval, or ex situ procedures should remain concentrated in specialised centres, every HPB surgeon should possess core vascular competence. Vascular and transplantation training should therefore become an integral part of advanced HPB education.
