Abstract:
Chiral charge-density waves (CDWs) are a rare form of electronic order with handedness, enabling novel couplings among light, lattice, and topology in quantum materials. Yet the microscopic origin of chirality has remained elusive, even in the prototypical chiral CDW system 1T-TiSe2. Using ab initio calculations, we investigate the structural stability and electronic structure of competing CDW models in 1T-TiSe2. We show that a chiral monoclinic ( ) structure is stabilized by the cooperative condensation of multiple phonon modes and reproduces the chiral topography and energy gap observed experimentally. We further find an exceptionally soft potential landscape around this energy-minimized structure, along the direction that removes the remaining rotational symmetry, allowing the lattice to fluctuate through fully asymmetric configurations while its average structure remains chiral. This dynamical chiral CDW naturally reconciles the chiral domains seen by time-averaged topographic probes with the complete loss of symmetry detected by bulk spectroscopy, and clarifies how chiral CDWs emerge from the interplay of lattice instability and fluctuation.

Crystal Field Theory - Tetrahedral and Square Planar Complexes
Crystal field theory (CFT) is applicable to molecules in geometries other than octahedral. In octahedral complexes, the lobes of the dx2−y2 and dz2 orbitals point directly at the ligands. For tetrahedral complexes, the d orbitals remain in place, but with only four ligands located between the axes. None of the orbitals points directly at the tetrahedral ligands. However, the dx2−y2 and dz2 orbitals (along the Cartesian axes) overlap with the ligands less than the dxy,...

Crystal Field Theory - Octahedral Complexes
To explain the observed behavior of transition metal complexes (such as colors), a model involving electrostatic interactions between the electrons from the ligands and the electrons in the unhybridized d orbitals of the central metal atom has been developed. This electrostatic model is crystal field theory (CFT). It helps to understand, interpret, and predict the colors, magnetic behavior, and some structures of coordination compounds of transition metals.
