Abstract:
Contraceptive counseling is an essential component of endocrine care because many endocrine disorders and treatments influence fertility, pregnancy outcomes, and contraceptive eligibility. This article outlines a patient-centered approach that incorporates reproductive goals, shared decision-making, and assessment using The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention medical eligibility criteria. It summarizes the efficacy, mechanisms, benefits, and risks of nonhormonal and hormonal contraceptive methods. Special considerations for patients with obesity, diabetes, thyroid disorders, and polycystic ovarian syndrome are discussed, along with potential medication interactions. Integrating contraception counseling into endocrinology practice can reduce unintended pregnancies and support optimal reproductive health outcomes.
