Abstract:
2-Oxabicyclo[2.1.1]hexanes (OBHs) have emerged as valuable saturated aromatic replacements, whereas their lactone analogues, 2-oxabicyclo[2.1.1]hexan-3-ones (OBHOs) remain underexplored, because of limited synthetic access. Herein, we report complementary polar and electrochemical strain-release strategies for the modular synthesis of 1,4-difunctionalized OBHOs from bicyclo[1.1.0]butane carboxylic acids. The two activation modes provide complementary perspectives toward the chemical space expansion of this underexplored scaffold.

Conformations of Cycloalkanes
Stability of Substituted Cyclohexanes
The two chair conformations of cyclohexanes undergo rapid interconversion at room temperature. Both forms have identical energies and stabilities, each comprising equal amounts of the equilibrium mixture. Replacing a hydrogen atom with a functional group makes the two conformations energetically non-equivalent.
For example, in...
Conformations of Cyclohexane
The chair form is the most stable and derives its name from its resemblance to the “easy chair.” In the chair conformation, two carbon atoms are arranged out-of-plane — one above and one below, minimizing the torsional strain. In the chair form, the bond angle is very close to the ideal tetrahedral value,...

Preparation of Epoxides
Epoxides result from alkene oxidation, which can be achieved by a) air, b) peroxy acids, c) hypochlorous acids, and d) halohydrin cyclization.
Epoxidation with Peroxy Acids
Epoxidation of alkenes via oxidation with peroxy acids involves the conversion of a carbon–carbon double bond to an epoxide using the oxidizing agent meta-chloroperoxybenzoic acid, commonly known as MCPBA. Since the O–O bond of peroxy acids is very weak, the addition of electrophilic oxygen of peroxy acids to...
