Abstract:
This review explores the complex role of time perception (TP) in human cognition and its alterations in psychiatric disorders. It discusses psychological models, neurobiological mechanisms, and the impact of TP distortions in conditions like depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and autism. TP influences behavior, emotion, and self-awareness, with dysfunctions linked to various neuroanatomical and neurochemical pathways. Despite growing interest, clinical assessment tools remain limited, and the field needs further research to understand brain mechanisms and improve diagnosis and treatment. Recognizing TP as a key dimension could bridge subjective experiences with neurobiological insights in mental health.
