Abstract:
Molecular catalysts assembled into solids can exhibit catalytic properties beyond those of their individual components, yet the origin of this enhancement is often unclear. Here, we address this issue using porous ionic crystals (PICs) based on polyoxometalates (POMs). Three isostructural PICs containing [W6O19]2-, [V2W4O19]4-, and [V3W3O19]5- were synthesized by assembling the nitrate salt of the Cr(III) benzoate cation [Cr3O(OOCC6H5)6(H2O)3]+ (CrBz) with the corresponding potassium salts K2[W6O19] (W6), K4[V2W4O19] (V2W4), and K5[V3W3O19] (V3W3), and evaluated as solid catalysts for cyclooctene epoxidation with tert-butyl hydroperoxide. PIC_W6 exhibited substantially higher catalytic activity than its constituent components, demonstrating that PIC formation creates a favorable environment for catalysis. The catalytic activity increased in the order PIC_W6 < PIC_V2W4 < PIC_V3W3. Experimental and theoretical analyses reveal electronic modulation of both the POM and CrBz units upon PIC formation, including charge redistribution between the two components.

Crystal Field Theory - Octahedral Complexes
To explain the observed behavior of transition metal complexes (such as colors), a model involving electrostatic interactions between the electrons from the ligands and the electrons in the unhybridized d orbitals of the central metal atom has been developed. This electrostatic model is crystal field theory (CFT). It helps to understand, interpret, and predict the colors, magnetic behavior, and some structures of coordination compounds of transition metals.

Crystal Field Theory - Tetrahedral and Square Planar Complexes
Crystal field theory (CFT) is applicable to molecules in geometries other than octahedral. In octahedral complexes, the lobes of the dx2−y2 and dz2 orbitals point directly at the ligands. For tetrahedral complexes, the d orbitals remain in place, but with only four ligands located between the axes. None of the orbitals points directly at the tetrahedral ligands. However, the dx2−y2 and dz2 orbitals (along the Cartesian axes) overlap with the ligands less than the dxy,...
Metal-Ligand Bonds
In these complexes, transition metals form coordinate covalent bonds, a kind of Lewis acid-base interaction in which both of the electrons in the bond are contributed by a donor (Lewis base) to an electron acceptor (Lewis acid). The Lewis acid in...

Ionic Crystal Structures
Most monatomic ions behave as charged spheres, and their attraction for ions of opposite charge is the same in every direction. Consequently, stable structures for ionic compounds result (1) when ions of one charge are surrounded by as many ions as possible of the opposite...
