Nursing in a Changing Climate: Addressing Vector- and Water-Borne Diseases
1Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Lethbridge, 4401 University Drive, Lethbridge, Alberta, T1K 3M4, Canada.
Abstract:
Climate-driven vector and water-borne diseases are emerging planetary health threats, requiring nurses to expand their roles in practice, education, research, and advocacy. Nurses must recognize early, nonspecific symptoms, educate high-risk populations, and collaborate across public health, climate science, and community sectors. Knowledge gaps, particularly among frontline nurses and those outside endemic regions, highlight the need for climate-focused education. By integrating planetary health principles, participating in disease surveillance, and leading advocacy efforts, nurses can enhance preparedness, promote health equity, and contribute to a climate-resilient health care system.
