Abstract:
This cross-sectional study examined the association between child sexual abuse (CSA) and machine-based gambling. Evidence on this association remains limited regarding sex differences. Data came from 27,699 adults aged 18 to 79 in the 2023 Japan COVID-19 and Society Internet Survey (JACSIS). Inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) with stabilized weights addressed confounding, and sex-stratified models tested for effect modification. Of 27,699 participants, 2,567 (9.3%) reported CSA before age 18. After IPTW adjustment, CSA was associated with higher prevalence of machine-based gambling (risk difference [RD]: 10.8% points [ppts], 95% confidence interval [CI]: 9.2 to 12.3, p < .001). The risk difference was larger among males (14.0 ppts, 95% CI: 11.3 to 16.7) than among females (8.4 ppts, 95% CI: 6.7 to 10.2, interaction p = .008). CSA showed a lasting association with machine-based gambling in adulthood, and the association concentrated among males. Trauma-informed approaches in gambling treatment and mental health settings should consider CSA history among survivors.
