Abstract:
Aneurysms of the extracranial carotid arteries are rare. A distinction is made between true aneurysms and pseudoaneurysms. Pulsatile swelling in the neck area and/or variable neurological symptoms can be diagnostically indicative. A distal aneurysm may be overlooked in vascular ultrasound. Diagnosis using CTA or MRA is essential for planning treatment management. Open surgical treatment is the method of choice, consisting of resection followed by vascular reconstruction or patch plasty. Endovascular methods are still decided on a case-by-case basis.
