Abstract:
Despite significant advances in ex vivo machine perfusion and innovation in graft modulation, successful translation of preclinical research into clinical practice is limited by the lack of multi-disciplinary exchange early in the research pipeline. LifeLUNG is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network funded by the European Union that aims to improve long-term outcomes in lung transplantation by leveraging ex vivo lung perfusion platforms to genetically modify donor lungs to modulate immune responses, reduce injury, and prevent graft rejection. LifeLUNG introduces an ELSA-IE approach, integrating Ethical, Legal, and Social Aspects research, Implementation science, and health Economics with preclinical research to navigate translational uncertainties and reduce the risk of late-stage innovation failure. By fostering the continuous exchange of insights and challenges among researchers, patients, and health systems, LifeLUNG aims to accelerate the responsible and clinically viable translation of lung transplantation innovations.
