Abstract:
BackgroundInformal women workers experience persistent employment insecurity due to unstable jobs, low wages, and the absence of social protection. These challenges are often intensified by gender, caste, and socioeconomic inequalities, yet their lived experiences of these females remain underexplored.ObjectiveThis Work examines how precarious work shapes the everyday lives of informal women workers in rural Bihar, India, focusing on how insecurity creates both shared experiences and unequal outcomes while exploring women's strategies for coping and resilience.MethodsA qualitative case study design was employed using 15 semi-structured, face-to-face interviews with women engaged in agricultural wage labor, dairy-related work, domestic service, and other informal work. Contributors were purposively selected through self-help groups, dairy cooperatives, and community networks. Data collection from August 2025 to December 2025 was transliterated, explained into English, and analyzed using thematic content analysis.ResultsFour key themes emerged: widespread employment insecurity characterized by irregular work and income; the influence of intersecting social inequalities, particularly caste and gender, on workers' experiences; the physical, emotional, and economic burdens of precarious employment; and the importance of informal support networks, self-help groups, and collective resilience in managing everyday challenges. Although precarity was a common experience, its effects varied significantly according to women's social and economic positions.ConclusionsPremature work is not just about job insecurity but has been defined as a multifaceted phenomenon based on structural inequalities. Efforts to ensure social security, worker rights, and empowerment of informal women workers need to be based on an intersectional perspective due to the complexities surrounding women's work experiences.
