Abstract:
BackgroundEmployment plays a significant role among veterans including facilitating their transition into the civilian society and is an important indicator of treatment progression for veterans presenting with substance use issues. While the Veterans Health Administration has instituted programs aimed at increasing employment outcomes among veterans, unemployment continues to be a significant problem among veterans presenting with substance use disorders (SUDs) in the United States.ObjectiveThe present study explored the perception and experience of work among veterans with a substance use history with a goal of understanding the complex meanings participants ascribe to employment.MethodsThe study utilized a qualitative research design. 25 veterans with self-identified history of substance use participated in the study.ResultsFour overarching themes were identified through thematic analysis: (a) source of economic support and independence, (b) provides structure, purpose and sense of accomplishment, (c) contribute to society and social connection, and (d) consequences of drug use on employment.ConclusionOverall, our findings indicate that despite the high unemployment rates among veterans with SUD, they are conscious of the benefits associated with being employed, which transcends the conventional role of employment as a mere source of income. Rehabilitation counselors and other professionals involved in the care for veterans with SUD should utilize an integrative treatment approach to care that includes employment as a critical component of recovery.
