Aims:
To synthesize ciprofloxacin-loaded gold nanoparticles (CIP:GNPs) and explore their sonodynamic antimicrobial activity against Helicobacter pylori (Hp).
Methods:
CIP:GNPs were prepared via room-temperature stirring. The bactericidal performance of CIP:GNPs and free CIP under ultrasound (US) irradiation was assessed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) assays were performed.
Results:
US-activated CIP:GNPs showed stronger antibacterial activity than free CIP or bare GNPs. This effect depended on CIP:GNPs concentration, US exposure time and ultrasonic power. CIP:GNPs + US caused severe bacterial morphological damage and elevated ROS generation.
Conclusions:
CIP:GNPs serve as promising agents for sonodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy, providing an alternative strategy for Hp treatment.
