Abstract:
Advanced practice providers (APPs), including nurse practitioners and physician assistants are at the forefront of healthcare delivery, helping to meet increasing healthcare demands, address productivity metrics, and mitigate workforce shortages. However, healthcare systems may lack structured, APP-specific continuing education and professional development programs to adequately address ongoing clinical competencies and career development. Medical grand rounds have traditionally served as a foundational form of continuing medical education for physicians. Adapting and expanding such educational models, accredited for continuing medical, nursing, or other professional education, to meet APP-specific learning needs can enhance clinical knowledge, promote evidence-based practice, strengthen interprofessional collaboration, and support professional identity among APPs. Implementing a scalable educational model, such as APP Grand Rounds, can support continuing professional education, foster APP engagement, provide leadership opportunities, and encourage participation in institutional shared governance. This review highlights the educational foundation of grand rounds, describes the development and implementation of an APP Grand Rounds program within a large pediatric healthcare organization, and discusses practical considerations for organizations seeking to establish similar continuing education programs.
