Background:
Oral health care professionals face complex challenges in creating resilient, person-centered, environmentally responsible, and economically viable practices. This article examines how innovative office design and construction, modifications to existing facilities, and operational changes can strengthen dental practice resilience. Four guiding principles frame this discussion: emergency preparedness, planet-centric and prevention-focused care models, holistic resource and waste management, and the cultivation of adaptive and mitigative organizations.
Types Of Studies Reviewed:
The authors review evidence and practice-informed literature on sustainable dental office design, green building strategies, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification, environmental health, occupational well-being, digital workflows, waste management, teledentistry, and prevention-oriented clinical operations.
Results:
Sustainable dental practice strategies include integrating digital workflows, implementing comprehensive waste management protocols, adopting teledentistry, and using risk-stratified recall intervals. Design strategies for new construction and retrofitting can improve indoor environmental quality, including air quality, lighting, and acoustics, while reducing water and energy consumption. Green building approaches may also support improved staff member well-being, enhanced patient experiences, environmental conservation, and greater practice security. Analysis of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification categories suggests that meaningful sustainability improvements are achievable without substantial cost premiums.
Conclusions And Practical Implications:
Dental practices can advance sustainability and resilience by prioritizing emergency preparedness, prevention-focused care, efficient resource use, comprehensive waste reduction, and adaptive organizational planning. Incorporating eco-friendly design and operations may reduce environmental impact while improving patient satisfaction, staff member well-being, and long-term practice viability amid evolving environmental and economic challenges.
