Abstract:
Use of perioperative allergy labelling seems to increase the rate of patient complications after surgery, including, paradoxically, the rates of allergic reactions. However, approximately 90% of allergy labels in patient records have been shown to be incorrect when checked using allergy testing, demonstrating the need for system redesign in allergy labelling practices to ensure that they function as intended to reduce the risk of allergy for patients undergoing anaesthesia.
