Abstract:
Artificial intelligence (AI) clinical decision support tools are becoming increasingly integrated into medical decision-making, offering rapid, evidence-based clinical recommendations. While surrounding discussion has largely focussed on senior clinicians, junior doctors, responsible for many day-to-day decisions in hospitals, face unique challenges in navigating these technologies among the many existing information sources. This paper examines the epistemic, ethical and practical implications of AI use by junior doctors, highlighting its potential to streamline knowledge access, as well as risks including automation, bias and deskilling. We introduce a suggested framework to help junior doctors navigate AI clinical advice and integrate it safely into clinical practice, among other information sources.
