Objective:
Continuous faculty development is a critical component of ensuring quality education for surgical trainees. This paper presents a novel approach to faculty development, utilizing faculty- and author-led book discussions to create a highly engaging series.
Design:
We followed the 4-Cs approach to increasing engagement with faculty development. Each annual faculty development series was anchored by discussion of a leadership development book.
Setting:
Single large academic institution with a primary academic medical center and multiple regional sites.
Participants:
About 24 and 31 faculty participated in the first and second summer development series, respectively.
Results:
Our annual summer faculty development series provides an integrated, interactive and intentional career development experience for surgical faculty in various stages of their career, which has led to robust and continuous engagement.
Conclusion:
A faculty- and author-led book discussion series is an effective approach to increasing surgeon engagement with faculty development.
