    Illusory contours, visual perception phenomena, are strongly linked to brightness and color differences between adjacent areas. Studies show that higher contrast in brightness and color leads to clearer perceived contours.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the role of brightness (Munsell value) and color differences in the perception of illusory contours.
    • To determine if contrast-induced differences are the primary drivers of illusory contour formation.

    Main Methods:

    • Subjects rated brightness differences and illusory contour clarity for Kanizsa and Ehrenstein patterns.
    • Stimuli were created using Munsell papers with varying brightness and color contrasts between figure and ground.
    • Eight figure-ground combinations were tested, with four exhibiting brightness differences and four exhibiting only hue/color differences.
