Penile tourniquet syndrome caused by hair
Insights
Long hairs can cause urethral fistulas in circumcised infants by constricting the penis. Physicians should examine the infant
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Surgery
- Urology
Background:
- Neonatal penile complications require prompt diagnosis.
- Urethral fistulas are rare but serious pediatric surgical conditions.
Observation:
- Two circumcised male infants presented with penile abnormalities.
- Symptoms included a swollen glans and abnormal urinary stream.
Findings:
- A urethral fistula was diagnosed in both cases.
- The fistula was attributed to constriction and ulceration by long hairs.
Implications:
- Highlights a rare cause of urethral fistula in infants.
- Emphasizes the importance of a thorough penile examination in infants with suggestive symptoms.
- Alerts clinicians to consider hair-related penile injury, especially in households with long-haired caregivers.
Abstract:
We have described two circumcised children who developed a urethral fistula caused by long hairs constricting and ulcerating the penis. These cases are presented to remind physicians to examine the infant's penis when he presents with a swollen glans, abnormal urinary stream, and a parent with long hair.
