    Background:

    • Maintaining vascular access is crucial for long-term intravenous chemotherapy in cancer patients.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of bovine arteriovenous fistulas for vascular access in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.

    Main Methods:

    • 48 cancer patients at Emory University Hospital underwent upper-arm bovine arteriovenous fistula creation between 1975 and 1977.
    • Heterografts were inserted from the distal brachial artery to the proximal brachial vein under various anesthesia types.

    Main Results:

    • Grafts functioned satisfactorily in 81% of patients until death or treatment termination.
    • Mean useful graft patency was 4.6 months (range: 0-27 months).
    • Thrombosis was the most common complication; infection and bleeding were infrequent. Reoperation was needed in 35% of grafts, with 50% salvaged.

    Conclusions:

    • Bovine arteriovenous fistulas are a viable option for vascular access in long-term chemotherapy patients.
    • The procedure demonstrated acceptable patency rates and a manageable complication profile.
    • No mortality was linked to the fistula creation or presence.
