    • Dispensing powdered ispaghula can generate airborne dust, posing a potential exposure risk in healthcare settings.

    Observation:

    • Two nurses reported allergic symptoms attributed to ispaghula powder exposure.
    • A subsequent investigation focused on 19 additional healthcare workers in a high-exposure department.

    Findings:

    • Eight out of 20 investigated subjects reported symptoms potentially linked to ispaghula powder.
    • Specific allergy tests, including RAST and skin tests, confirmed sensitization in five subjects.
    • Exposure tests with ispaghula powder in symptomatic individuals further supported the link to allergic reactions.

    Implications:

    • Occupational exposure to ispaghula powder dust is associated with allergic sensitization in healthcare workers.
    • Transitioning to less dusty, granulated forms of ispaghula laxatives could significantly mitigate sensitization risks.
