A rare lymphangiosarcoma developed from lymphangioma circumscriptum in a patient previously treated with significant x-ray therapy. This suggests radiation may contribute to this rare cancer, advising caution with radiation exposure for lymphangioma circumscriptum.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Dermatology
    • Radiology

    Background:

    • Lymphangioma circumscriptum is a benign vascular tumor.
    • Malignant transformation of lymphangioma circumscriptum is exceedingly rare.
    • Previous reports suggest a potential link between radiation and malignant change.

    Observation:

    • A case of lymphangiosarcoma developing at the site of pre-existing lymphangioma circumscriptum is presented.
    • The affected skin was on the anterior abdominal wall.
    • The patient had received substantial x-ray therapy at the site of the lymphangioma.

    Findings:

    • This represents only the second reported instance of lymphangiosarcoma arising in lymphangioma circumscriptum.
    • Both reported cases involved prior significant exposure to x-ray therapy.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • The findings suggest a possible etiological role for x-irradiation in this rare malignant neoplasm.
  • Implications:

    • X-irradiation may be a contributing factor in the development of lymphangiosarcoma from lymphangioma circumscriptum.
    • Caution is advised regarding substantial x-ray therapy for lymphangioma circumscriptum.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the relationship between radiation and malignant transformation in lymphangioma circumscriptum.
