    Area of Science:

    • Veterinary Pathology
    • Wildlife Oncology
    • Comparative Oncology

    Background:

    • Myxosarcomas are rare malignant tumors of mesenchymal origin.
    • Wapiti (Cervus canadensis) are large North American cervids susceptible to various diseases.

    Observation:

    • A case of myxosarcoma was identified in an adult male wapiti from western Colorado.
    • The neoplasm was situated on the medial aspect of the right thigh.

    Findings:

    • The myxosarcoma demonstrated extensive infiltration into surrounding soft tissues.
    • Histopathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of myxosarcoma.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights the occurrence of myxosarcoma in wildlife, specifically wapiti.
    • Understanding tumor behavior in non-domesticated species contributes to comparative oncology research.
    • Further investigation may be warranted to understand the etiology and prevalence of such neoplasms in wapiti populations.
