    Area of Science:

    • Neuroscience
    • Ophthalmology
    • Vestibular System

    Background:

    • The vestibular system, particularly the utricle, plays a role in various autonomic functions.
    • The efferent pathways linking the vestibular system to ocular structures are not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of electrical stimulation of the utricle on pupillary and lens responses.
    • To elucidate the neural pathways mediating these vestibular-induced ocular changes.

    Main Methods:

    • Electrical stimulation of the utricle in cats with C-1 spinal cord transection.
    • Assessment of pupillary diameter and lens power (diopters).
    • Evaluation of effects after transection of the ipsilateral cervical sympathetic trunk.

    Main Results:

    • Utricle stimulation caused bilateral pupillary dilation and anti-accommodative lens changes (0.4-3.0 diopters).
    • These responses persisted two weeks after cutting the sympathetic trunk.
    • Vestibular stimulation appears to inhibit the parasympathetic pathway from the Edinger-Westphal nucleus.

    Conclusions:

    • Vestibular stimulation influences ocular autonomic responses via parasympathetic inhibition.
    • The efferent pathways travel outside the medial longitudinal fasciculii in the brainstem.
