    Summary

    This study investigated the link between ankylosing spondylitis and MLC determinant 27a, finding no association. However, the study confirmed ankylosing spondylitis is associated with W27, a second series antigen.

    Background:

    • Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is an inflammatory disease with a suspected genetic predisposition.
    • The Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) system plays a crucial role in immune responses and disease susceptibility.
    • Previous research suggested potential links between AS and specific HLA antigens and mixed lymphocyte culture (MLC) determinants.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine if the hypothetical disease susceptibility locus for ankylosing spondylitis is linked to the MLC determinant 27a.
    • To investigate the association of MLC determinant 27a with HLA-B27 (W27) and other HLA specificities.
