    Summary

    Plasma calcitonin-like activity (CLA) is normal in chronic renal failure patients and does not correlate with bone disease. However, normal CLA may help protect the skeleton from high parathyroid hormone levels.

    Background:

    • Renal osteodystrophy is a common complication in chronic renal failure (CRF).
    • The role of calcitonin in the pathogenesis of renal osteodystrophy remains unclear.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the role of calcitonin in the pathogenesis of renal osteodystrophy.
    • To measure plasma calcitonin-like activity (CLA) in patients with CRF.
    • To assess the correlation between plasma CLA, bone lesions, and clinical parameters in CRF.
