    Summary

    This study reports on two patients with neurofibromatosis and leprosy, finding Mycobacterium leprae proliferate within Schwann cells of neurofibromata. This supports the theory that leprosy initially affects nerves via Schwann cell proliferation.

    Background:

    • Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder causing tumor growth in nerves.
    • Leprosy is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae.
    • The interaction between these conditions is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the pathological role of Mycobacterium leprae in neurofibromatosis.
    • To elucidate the cellular mechanisms of nerve involvement in co-infected patients.
