    Background:

    • Chronic obstructive bronchitis (COB) can lead to ventilatory failure.
    • Patients with COB often have impaired ventilatory capacity.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of nitrazepam on ventilatory function and arterial blood gases in patients with COB.
    • To determine the safety and efficacy of nitrazepam in this patient population.

    Main Methods:

    • A double-blind, controlled crossover trial was conducted.
    • Six patients with chronic obstructive bronchitis and ventilatory failure were enrolled.
    • Ventilatory capacity and arterial blood gas tensions were measured.

    Main Results:

    • Nitrazepam administration resulted in a decrease in ventilatory capacity.
    • The drug exacerbated ventilatory failure, indicated by worsening blood gas levels.
    • One patient experienced a significant drop in Pao(2) and a rise in Paco(2) while on nitrazepam.

    Conclusions:

    • Nitrazepam negatively impacts respiratory function in patients with severe chronic obstructive bronchitis.
    • Nitrazepam is contraindicated in patients suffering from severe chronic obstructive bronchitis and ventilatory failure.
