Lithium compound treatment and psoriasis.

Summary

Lithium compounds may trigger or worsen psoriasis in some individuals. Skin lesions improved after discontinuing lithium treatment, suggesting a causal link.

Background:

Psoriasis vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin condition.
Lithium compounds are used to treat bipolar disorder and other psychiatric conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the potential link between lithium compound treatment and the development or exacerbation of psoriasis.

Main Methods:

Observational study of 12 new psoriasis cases and 3 exacerbated cases during lithium treatment.
Clinical and histological examination of skin lesions.
Lithium withdrawal and re-challenge (provocation test) in some patients.

Main Results:

Psoriasis developed or worsened in patients treated with lithium compounds.
Clinical presentation mimicked severe psoriasis vulgaris.
Skin lesions resolved or improved upon lithium withdrawal.
Positive provocation tests in two patients indicated lithium-induced psoriasis.

Conclusions:

Lithium compounds may induce or exacerbate psoriasis.
The clinical and histological features are consistent with psoriasis vulgaris.
Further investigation into the mechanism of lithium-induced psoriasis is warranted.
