    Summary

    Elevated levels of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate were found in blood samples from patients with various cancers and lymphomas. This suggests increased metabolite synthesis by tumor tissues contributes to this observed abnormality.

    Background:

    • 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) is a key metabolite in red blood cells.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the concentration of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate in patients with various cancers.
    • To compare 2,3-DPG levels in cancer patients with age-matched controls.

    Main Methods:

    • Whole venous blood samples were collected from patients diagnosed with various cancers and lymphomas.
    • Blood samples were analyzed for 2,3-diphosphoglycerate concentration.
    • Patient data was compared to age-matched healthy controls.

    • Increased 2,3-diphosphoglycerate concentrations were observed in patients with breast, ovarian, lung, and colon cancers, but not rectal cancer.
