    Summary

    Cadmium exposure in young quail caused anemia and stunted growth. Ascorbic acid supplementation largely prevented anemia and improved growth, but did not affect liver iron or cadmium levels.

    Background:

    • Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) plays a role in iron absorption and antioxidant defense.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of cadmium exposure on growth and iron metabolism in young Japanese quail.
    • To determine the efficacy of dietary ascorbic acid supplementation in mitigating cadmium-induced toxicity.

    Main Methods:

    • Young Japanese quail were fed a diet containing the toxicant cadmium for 4 weeks.
    • A separate group received dietary ascorbic acid supplements.
    • Growth, liver iron, and liver cadmium concentrations were measured.
