Myopia is not a cause of serious disease, although the two are sometimes associated. In contrast to hyperopia, it is a symptom and is easily understood. Myopia can have social as well as physical effects. Myopic patients often fear that they have increased their refractive error by their own behavior. This belief is enhanced by practitioners who subscribe to environmental theories and therapies.
