Persistent proatlantal artery.

N A Hutchinson, J D Miller

Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry
    |August 1, 1970

    Summary

A persistent proatlantal artery, originating from the internal carotid artery, can be mistaken for the hypoglossal artery. This rare vessel forms the vertebral artery outside the skull, entering via the foramen magnum.

    Area of Science:

    • Anatomy
    • Embryology
    • Vascular Surgery

    Background:

    • The persistent proatlantal artery is a rare anatomical variant.
    • It arises from the internal carotid artery and can be confused with other cranial base arteries.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe a case of persistent proatlantal artery.
    • To review the developmental anatomy of this vascular anomaly.

    Main Methods:

    • Case report presentation.
    • Review of embryological and anatomical literature.

    Main Results:

    • The persistent proatlantal artery arises from the internal carotid artery in the neck.
    • Unlike the hypoglossal artery, it forms the vertebral artery extralacranially.
    • It enters the cranial cavity through the foramen magnum.

    Conclusions:

    • Accurate identification of the persistent proatlantal artery is crucial to avoid misdiagnosis.
    • Understanding its developmental anatomy aids in differentiating it from the hypoglossal artery.
