    Summary

Patients with Cooley anemia, particularly those heavily transfused, face an increased risk of Toxoplasma Gondii infection. Testing revealed higher rates of anti-toxoplasma antibodies in these patients compared to controls.

    Area of Science:

    • Immunology
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Hematology

    Background:

    • Cooley anemia (Thalassemia major) is a severe inherited blood disorder.
    • Patients with Cooley anemia often require frequent blood transfusions.
    • Toxoplasma Gondii is an opportunistic parasite that can cause serious illness in immunocompromised individuals.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence of anti-toxoplasma antibodies in patients with Cooley anemia.
    • To assess the risk of Toxoplasma Gondii infection in heavily transfused thalassemic patients.
    • To compare infection rates with control groups.

    Main Methods:

    • Indirect immunofluorescence test (IIFT) was used to detect anti-toxoplasma antibodies.
    • Sera from 85 Cooley anemia patients, 100 normal children, and 550 blood donors were analyzed.
    • Specific anti-IgM antibodies were tested to identify active infections.

    Main Results:

    • 10 out of 85 Cooley anemia patients (11.8%) showed positive anti-toxoplasma antibodies.
    • Two thalassemic patients had detectable IgM antibodies, indicating active infection.
    • Control groups had lower positive rates: 2/100 normal children and 5/550 blood donors.

    Conclusions:

    • Heavily transfused Cooley anemia patients are at a higher risk of acquiring Toxoplasma Gondii infection.
    • Blood transfusions may serve as a potential route for parasite transmission.
    • Screening for Toxoplasma Gondii in transfusion-dependent thalassemia patients is recommended.
