    Summary

    Visually evoked responses (VERs) showed delayed peak latencies in multiple sclerosis patients compared to controls. This technique may detect hidden cerebral lesions, even with normal routine EEGs.

    Background:

    • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease affecting the central nervous system.
    • Routine electroencephalography (EEG) may not detect subtle neurological changes in MS patients.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare visually evoked cerebral responses (VERs) between MS patients and healthy controls.
    • To assess the utility of VERs in detecting occult cerebral lesions in MS.

    Main Methods:

    • Fifty patients with multiple sclerosis and 50 control subjects underwent VER testing.
    • Peak latencies and amplitudes of occipital (OII-OV) and central (CIV, CV) components were analyzed.
    • VER results were correlated with routine EEG findings and clinical symptoms.

    Main Results:

    • Significantly delayed average peak latencies were observed in four occipital and two central VER components in MS patients.
    • No significant differences in VER amplitude were found between groups.
    • Abnormal VERs were detected in MS patients with normal or minor EEG findings, and even in those with only spinal cord symptoms.

    Conclusions:

    • VERs are sensitive to delays in signal transmission caused by demyelination in MS.
    • VER latency changes are a valuable tool for detecting subclinical or occult cerebral lesions in multiple sclerosis.
    • VER testing offers a complementary diagnostic approach when routine EEG is inconclusive.
