    Summary

Traumatic reticulitis in dairy buffaloes frequently leads to secondary mastitis. This study found a high association between traumatic reticulitis and idiopathic mastitis in buffaloes, suggesting a link between the conditions.

    Area of Science:

    • Veterinary Medicine
    • Animal Science
    • Dairy Production

    Background:

    • Traumatic reticulitis is a significant condition in ruminants, often caused by ingestion of foreign bodies.
    • Mastitis is a common udder infection in dairy animals, impacting milk quality and production.
    • The relationship between traumatic reticulitis and secondary mastitis in dairy buffaloes requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence of traumatic reticulitis in dairy buffaloes.
    • To determine the incidence of mastitis in buffaloes diagnosed with traumatic reticulitis.
    • To explore the potential link between traumatic reticulitis and secondary mastitis in this species.

    Main Methods:

    • A clinical examination was conducted on 500 dairy buffaloes across two farms.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Buffaloes were diagnosed with traumatic reticulitis based on clinical signs and history.
  • The incidence of mastitis was assessed in buffaloes with diagnosed traumatic reticulitis.
  • Main Results:

    • Out of 500 dairy buffaloes, 51 (10.2%) were diagnosed with traumatic reticulitis (subacute and chronic forms).
    • Of the 51 buffaloes with traumatic reticulitis, 39 (76.5%) also had idiopathic mastitis.
    • The incidence of mastitis associated with traumatic reticulitis was significantly higher than primary mastitis in cattle.

    Conclusions:

    • Traumatic reticulitis is a prevalent condition in the studied dairy buffalo population.
    • A high percentage of buffaloes with traumatic reticulitis developed secondary mastitis.
    • Bacterial spread from the reticulitis focus, exacerbated by the foreign body syndrome, is the likely cause of secondary mastitis.
