    Background:

    • Stress-induced gastric ulcers are a significant concern in various physiological conditions.
    • Understanding age-related susceptibility to stress ulcers is crucial for developing targeted interventions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of age on the development of stress-induced gastric ulcers in a rat model.
    • To examine the relationship between gastric acid output and ulcer severity across different age groups.

    Main Methods:

    • Rats of three different ages (2, 7, and 12 months) were subjected to supine body restraint and cold exposure (5°C) for 3 hours.
    • A subset of rats underwent pyloric ligation prior to restraint to measure total acid output.
    • Lesion length and gastric acid output were quantified and compared across age groups.

    Main Results:

    • Mean cumulative lesion lengths varied significantly with age: 22.0 mm (2-mo), 43.0 mm (7-mo), and 16.0 mm (12-mo).
    • Total acid output per hour was 134.6 μEq/60 min (2-mo), 178.2 μEq/60 min (7-mo), and 64.7 μEq/60 min (12-mo).
    • Older rats were not found to be more susceptible to stress ulcers, and gastric acid output did not show a significant relationship with ulceration severity.

    Conclusions:

    • Age influences the susceptibility to stress-induced gastric ulcers, with middle-aged rats (7 months) showing the highest susceptibility in this model.
    • Gastric acid production is not the primary determinant of stress ulcer severity in aged rats.
    • This study highlights the complex interplay of age and stress in gastric pathophysiology.
