Summary

This case study details a patient with metastatic carcinoid tumor to the choroid treated with a radon ring implant. The therapy showed minimal tumor reduction and was ultimately ineffective, suggesting carcinoid tumors are radioresistant.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Oncology
  • Radiation Oncology

Background:

  • Metastatic carcinoid tumors can rarely affect the choroid.
  • Previous conservative treatments for choroidal carcinoid metastases include chemotherapy and radiation.
  • Surgical intervention like enucleation is a last resort for advanced cases.

Observation:

  • This report details the seventh case of metastatic carcinoid to the choroid.
  • The patient received a novel conservative therapy: implantation of a radon ring.
  • Initial clinical results were promising, but ultrasound showed minimal tumor size reduction.

Findings:

  • The radon ring implantation had minimal histologic effect on tumor cell viability.
  • A large retinal detachment led to significant visual deterioration.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Enucleation was required due to persistent pain from neovascular glaucoma.
  • Implications:

    • Metastatic carcinoid tumors of the choroid appear relatively radioresistant.
    • External proton beam irradiation may be more effective for smaller choroidal lesions.
    • Further research into effective treatments for metastatic carcinoid to the choroid is warranted.
