Erectile impotence associated with transurethral prostatectomy.

E P So, P C Ho, W Bodenstab

    Summary

Transurethral prostatectomy did not significantly impact erectile function, as objective nocturnal penile tumescence testing showed no postoperative changes in patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy. Subjective reports sometimes differed from objective findings.

    Area of Science:

    • Urology
    • Andrology
    • Men's Health

    Background:

    • Benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) is a common condition in aging men.
    • Surgical interventions for BPH, such as transurethral prostatectomy (TURP), can potentially affect erectile function.
    • Assessing postoperative erectile function is crucial for patient quality of life.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To prospectively evaluate the impact of transurethral prostatectomy on erectile function.
    • To compare subjective patient-reported sexual history with objective nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT) monitoring post-surgery.

    Main Methods:

    • Prospective study involving 35 male patients undergoing TURP for BPH.
    • Preoperative and postoperative sexual histories were obtained.
    • Erectile function was objectively assessed using nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT) monitoring.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • No significant difference was observed in NPT recordings between preoperative and postoperative assessments.
    • A discordance between subjective reports and objective NPT findings was noted in 12 out of 35 patients.
    • TURP did not demonstrate a significant negative impact on objective erectile function.

    Conclusions:

    • Transurethral prostatectomy for benign prostatic hypertrophy does not appear to significantly impair objective erectile function.
    • Subjective patient perception of erectile potency may not always align with objective physiological measures post-TURP.
    • Nocturnal penile tumescence monitoring provides an objective measure for assessing erectile function changes after prostate surgery.
