    Background:

    • Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) can induce excessive grooming behavior.
    • The role of dopaminergic systems in ACTH-induced behaviors is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the involvement of dopaminergic neurotransmission in ACTH-induced excessive grooming.
    • To determine the effects of dopamine agonists and antagonists on this behavior.

    Main Methods:

    • Administered intracerebroventricular (ICV) injections of ACTH1-24 to induce grooming behavior.
    • Tested the effects of various dopamine agonists and antagonists (haloperidol, metoclopramide, pimozide, butaclamol, apomorphine) on grooming and locomotor activity.

    Main Results:

    • Dopamine antagonists (haloperidol, metoclopramide, pimozide, butaclamol) significantly reduced grooming scores without impairing locomotor activity.
    • Specifically, haloperidol decreased grooming while increasing locomotor activity at certain doses.
    • Apomorphine, a dopamine agonist, potentiated ACTH-induced grooming.

    Conclusions:

    • Dopaminergic neurotransmission plays a crucial role in the expression of ACTH-induced grooming behavior.
    • These findings support the hypothesis that dopamine pathways are necessary for this behavioral response.
