[Beta 2 microglobulin].

    Summary
    This summary is machine-generated.

Serum beta 2 microglobulin (beta 2 mu) levels are elevated in lymphoproliferative malignancies. While not definitive for diagnosis, beta 2 mu monitoring aids in tracking conditions like Hodgkin's disease and multiple myeloma.

    Area of Science:

    • Hematology
    • Immunology
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Serum beta 2 microglobulin (beta 2 mu) is a protein found on the surface of lymphocytes.
    • Elevated levels can indicate various conditions, including malignancies and autoimmune diseases.

    Observation:

    • Beta 2 mu levels were measured in 157 patients over 1-38 months.
    • Patients with nonremissional lymphoproliferative malignancies showed significantly higher beta 2 mu levels (mean 4.35 +/- 2.24 mg/l) compared to healthy subjects (mean 1.86 +/- 0.30 mg/l) and those with nonmalignant diseases (mean 2.68 +/- 1.76 mg/l).

    Findings:

    • Serum beta 2 mu levels below 2.50 mg/l do not exclude hematologic malignancy.
    • Levels between 2.50-5.00 mg/l are common in lymphoproliferative/myeloproliferative disorders but also in viral or autoimmune diseases.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Levels above 5.00 mg/l were observed exclusively in lymphoproliferative malignancies and one case of AIDS.
  • Implications:

    • Serum beta 2 mu determination has limited diagnostic value for initial detection of hematologic malignancies.
    • Beta 2 mu monitoring is highly advantageous for the follow-up of Hodgkin's disease, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and multiple myeloma during treatment and remission.
